The Technology Behind ICC

FDA-Cleared Brain Function Assessment Technology

We use objective, sensor-based technology designed to assess brain function — not just structure — as an aid in clinical evaluation of suspected traumatic brain injury.

Standard imaging shows structure. We assess function.

Conventional CT and MRI scans are excellent at detecting structural brain damage — bleeds, fractures, large lesions. But many traumatic brain injuries, especially mild TBIs and concussions, involve disturbances in how the brain processes information rather than visible structural damage. These functional injuries often produce normal-appearing CT and MRI results even when the patient is experiencing real, persistent symptoms.

The technology we use measures the brain's electrical activity and processing patterns through non-invasive surface sensors, providing objective data about how the brain is currently functioning. This data can serve as an important complement to traditional imaging in the broader clinical evaluation of suspected brain injury.

What happens during an assessment

  1. 1

    Step 1Patient Intake(10–15 minutes)

A trained technician collects relevant background information and prepares the patient for the assessment. We do not collect detailed health information through our website — all clinical intake happens in a secure, HIPAA-compliant manner during the appointment.

  2. 2

    Step 2Sensor Placement(10 minutes)

Non-invasive surface sensors are placed on the scalp using a comfortable cap or individual sensors. There are no needles, injections, or radiation involved.

  3. 3

    Step 3Data Collection(20–30 minutes)

The patient performs simple tasks while the technology records brain electrical activity and processing patterns. Patients are awake, comfortable, and free to communicate throughout.

  4. 4

    Step 4Data Processing

Collected data is processed and analyzed using validated algorithms cleared by the FDA as an aid in clinical evaluation.

  5. 5

    Step 5Neurologist Review

A board-certified neurologist in our network independently reviews the report and provides their clinical opinion. The reviewing neurologist's assessment is included with every report at no additional cost.

  6. 6

    Step 6Report Delivery(within 48 hours)

The finalized 30-page report is delivered to the patient and any authorized recipients (such as the patient's attorney or treating physician) within 48 hours of the assessment.

Objective Findings

Quantitative data from the assessment, including measurable indicators of brain function compared against normative populations.

Neurologist's Clinical Opinion

An independent review and clinical opinion from a board-certified neurologist in our network, included with every report.

Professional Formatting

Clear, structured presentation suitable for clinical care teams, insurance documentation, and legal proceedings.

Built on FDA-cleared technology

The brain assessment technology used by ICC is cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an aid in the clinical evaluation of patients. ICC technicians are trained in proper administration of the assessment, and every report is independently reviewed by a board-certified neurologist in our network.

ICC provides assessment services and reports. We do not provide treatment, prescriptions, or ongoing medical care. Our reports are intended to support — not replace — the clinical judgment of treating physicians.

Common Questions About the Assessment

Is this the same as an MRI or CT scan?+

No. MRI and CT scans produce structural images of the brain. The technology we use measures brain electrical activity and processing patterns to assess function. It is designed to complement, not replace, structural imaging.

Are there any side effects or risks?+

The assessment is non-invasive and does not involve radiation, injections, or medications. Most patients report no discomfort beyond mild sensor adhesive on the scalp.

Can children be assessed?+

Please contact us to discuss pediatric assessments. Eligibility depends on the age of the patient and the specific clinical context.

What conditions besides TBI can this assess?+

The technology is FDA-cleared as an aid in evaluating certain brain function patterns. The reviewing neurologist's clinical opinion will address what the findings may indicate. Specific clinical interpretation should always come from your treating physicians.
